About Mothers & More

Serving over 7,500 mothers in the U.S. and beyond, Mothers & More is a non-profit membership organization that cares for the caregiver. We provide a nationwide network of local chapters for mothers who are – by choice or circumstance – altering their participation in the paid workplace over the course of their active parenting years. Our chapters are structured to support a mother as she navigates the challenges of her daily life, whether she is a full-time family caregiver or struggling to achieve a better balance between the demands of paid work and family care.

We realize that mothers want more - more time with their children, more flexible work options, and more ways to combine career and family over a number of years. We also recognize that mothers are more - they juggle many other roles and interests in addition to their role as parent. The programming, information and resources we offer provide a sense of connection for women balancing the roles of woman, mother, and professional.

Mothers & More is comprised of women from a variety of backgrounds and who utilize many different methods to combine paid employment and care options. Some are mothers who have recently left the paid workforce to care for their children at home full-time. Others are mothers working part-time outside the home, starting up their own businesses or pursuing further education. Some are utilizing flexible work options such as flex-time, job sharing or telecommuting. We also have mothers transitioning back to full-time paid employment.

Despite the diversity of our members, they have this in common: our members are intelligent, talented and resourceful women. Through our chapters and other services, we provide opportunities for mothers to connect with one another in ways that assist them in developing their unique identities as women and help them move more confidently through the transitions that affect their family, work and life.

Mothers & More champions the value and necessity of all mothers’ work to our society - paid and unpaid, within and outside of the home. We strive to raise awareness about the fact that mothers live and work in a society that presents significant barriers to their ability to succeed as women, citizens, parents or participants in the workforce. By uniting mothers to act on their own behalf, we seek to eliminate policies, practices and attitudes that unfairly impact mothers as caregivers.

Our Mission

Mothers & More is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through support, education and advocacy. We address mothers’ needs as individuals and members of society, and promote the value of all the work mothers do.

Our mission is based on the following core beliefs:

  • A mother is more than any single role she plays at any given point in her lifetime. She is entitled to fully explore and develop her identity as she chooses: as a woman, a citizen, a parent or an employee.

  • All the work mothers do - whether paid or unpaid - has social and economic value.

  • All women deserve recognition and support for their right to choose if and how to combine parenting and paid employment.

  • All mothers, all children and all families are unique. We respect the wisdom of each mother to decide how to care for her children, her family and herself.

  • Mothers have the right to fulfill their caregiving responsibilities without incurring social and economic penalties.

  • The transitions women make into and through motherhood are challenging and can be difficult.

  • Together, mothers are powerful.

The Greater Bangor Chapter of Mothers & More

The Greater Bangor Chapter of Mothers & More was founded in March 2003 and we serve an area that encompasses Old Town, Orono, Bangor, Hampden, Levant, Brewer, Orrington, Bucksport and have even had members coming from as far away as Monroe. Since that time, we've been able to establish a number of additional activities beyond the two nightly meetings a month that are consistent for all National Chapters. One example is our weekly playgroups. The playgroups allow members who are currently staying home to have interactions with other members and to let our children have play dates to look forward to. The playgroups are either at a member's home in the colder months, or as a scheduled park day during warmer weather. Another regular activity is a monthly Mom's Night Out, for a chance to socialize with other mothers outside of the scheduled meetings.

Our chapter members come from all walks of life, both native Mainers and those from “away.” We have members who fit all the different profiles of mothers who are trying to balance paid and unpaid work: some are are currently staying home, some are starting their own business, some work part-time, and some are going back to school. What we all have in common is a desire to figure out the best balance for ourselves and our families, for the stage of life we are in now.
